Meter Matters is a tool for reading your own utility bills. This page says what it keeps about you, what it does with it, and how to get rid of it. It's written to be read, not skimmed past.
What it keeps
- Your account. Your email address, your name if you gave one, and either a password (stored hashed, never readable) or the fact that you sign in with Google.
- Your bills. The statements and usage files you upload, forward or type in. That is the point of the app.
- Your home's ZIP code and state. Used to fetch the weather and the right grid and rate figures. Your street address is never asked for.
- Your settings. Things like your supply rate, the names you give to changes in usage, and which badges you've earned.
- If you connect Gmail: a token that lets the app read your mailbox, and the bill emails it finds there. Nothing else from your mail is kept.
What it does with it
- Shows your bills back to you, compared, forecast and explained.
- Sends your ZIP code, and only that, to Open-Meteo to get past temperatures for your area.
- Similar homes. Your usage per day can be averaged with other homes in your state on the same fuel, so you can see how yours sits. It only appears once there are enough homes for no one to be identifiable, and you can turn it off on the Add bills page.
- Share links. If you share your energy year, the link carries the numbers and nothing that names you. You can switch it off at any time.
What it never does
- Sell, rent or share your information with anyone.
- Show advertising, or use trackers or analytics on the app or this site.
- Send you email. There are no newsletters or notifications of any kind at the moment.
- Use Google account data for anything beyond signing you in and, if you choose, finding bill emails.
Google sign-in and Gmail
Signing in with Google gives the app your name and email address, nothing more. Connecting Gmail is separate and optional. It asks for read-only access, because Google offers no way to let an app read only your bills. The app looks for bill emails and ignores the rest. Disconnecting on the Add bills page hands the access back to Google and deletes the token the app held. Bills already imported stay.
Meter Matters' use of information from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Cookies
One cookie, to keep you signed in. It is not used for anything else.
Where it lives
The app runs on Google Cloud and the database is hosted by Supabase, both in the United States. Connections are encrypted.
Deleting everything
On the Add bills page, under Your account, type your email address and press Delete everything. Every bill, export and setting goes immediately, and any Gmail connection is disconnected. A single home you delete is kept for 30 days in case you change your mind, then removed for good.
Questions
The code is open: github.com/davidfic/meter-matters. Questions and concerns are welcome as an issue there.
