Meter Matters

Know what your utility bills are doing, and why.

Meter Matters reads the bills and usage files your electric, gas and water companies already give you. It tells you what changed, whether it was you, the weather or the price, and what the next bill will probably be.

Sign in with Google or an email address. No card, no trial, nothing to install.

A one-minute look around. Everything on screen is an invented household, not a real one.

It answers the questions a bill raises

A bill tells you what you owe. It doesn't tell you what happened. Meter Matters does.

Was it me, or the weather?

Every bill is compared with the same weeks a year earlier, with the weather taken out. A cold February isn't mistaken for a wasteful one.

Or was it the price?

Each change in a bill is split into three parts: what you used, what the weather did, and what the rate did. The three add up to the change exactly.

What will the next one be?

A forecast for the next statement, with a range that comes from how far past forecasts were off, not from a guess.

Did something change?

A step up in usage the weather doesn't explain gets found, sized and priced. Give it a name, like "new heat pump", and it stops being flagged.

What is this costing me?

A space heater, an EV, a dripping tap. Priced at your own rate, with the carbon from your own grid.

Am I actually doing better?

Streaks, levels and badges that count only bills that really went down after the weather is taken out. A mild winter earns nothing.

A look around

Every screenshot is the app on an invented household. No real bills.

Every utility, side by side

This bill, the next one, and a plain sentence on where the change came from. Electric, gas and water each get their own page too.

The overview: electric and gas cards side by side, each with the current bill, the forecast and the split between you, the weather and the rate

Compared with last year, fairly

How much less you used once the weather is accounted for, and how many of the last twelve bills beat the year before.

The electric page: current statement, forecast, and the weather-adjusted comparison with last year

You, the weather, the rate

Each bill against a year earlier, split into what you did and what the weather did. Then the last twelve in dollars, with the rate as a third part.

Two charts: each bill split into you and the weather, and the twelve-bill dollar change split into you, the weather and the rate

The price, taken apart

Your price per kilowatt-hour split into supply and delivery, how it has moved, and other suppliers' offers priced on your own usage. Massachusetts for now, more states next.

The rates page: supply and delivery over time, and supplier offers priced against the home's own last twelve months

Your energy year

The whole year on one page, with a link you can share. The link carries the numbers and nothing that names you.

The year page: total spend, each utility's year, and a month-by-month chart

A game that plays fair

Eighteen badges, each showing its rule and your progress. Locked ones say what's left to do. It follows your light or dark setting.

Getting bills in

Use whatever your utility already gives you. Nothing to scan, nothing to retype, unless you want to.

  • Forward bill emailsYou get a private address. Set a filter once and new bills arrive on their own.
  • Connect GmailIt finds bill emails itself. Read-only, and you can disconnect at any time.
  • Type one inAmount, dates and usage, by hand. Good for a first bill or an odd one.
  • More than one homeEach home is kept separate, with its own pages and its own weather.

Your bills stay yours

Meter Matters exists to read your bills to you, not to do anything else with them.

  • Nothing is sold, shared or used for advertising. There are no trackers on the app or on this page.
  • Weather is looked up by ZIP code only. Your address is never asked for.
  • Deleting your account deletes every bill, export and setting, straight away.
  • The code is open source on GitHub, so you can see exactly what it does.
